A2.3: Reflection on Personal Interests

Why do you want to become a speech-language pathologist? What is there about being a speech-language pathologist that drew you to this profession?

I want to become a speech-language pathologist because it is a profession that will require me to be a life-long learner.  There is so much to learn in this profession, and I can’t possibly know everything.  However,  I will always have more knowledge to acquire as I research information and experience new situations, and it will challenge me as a clinician.  I strive to challenge myself.  I’ve realized that every person is different.  Even if one person has the same disorder as another, his or her symptoms will not be the same, and he or she will require different treatment and care.  I love that the professional field is broad, and there are many options such as different work environments, age population, and type of work to choose from.  Another reason I have a strong desire to become a speech-language pathologist is because of the one-on-one relationships I will experience with the clients.  I’ve always enjoyed helping others in some way, and the field of speech-language pathology will allow me to do so.  When I think of some people who have made a positive impact on my life, I am reminded of many teachers I had throughout school.  I will hopefully have the opportunity to make a difference in other people’s lives, and they may remember me as “the one who made a difference”.
